Exploring Asakusa with Goat Mesh

Only one stop from REN’s home in Kuramae, Asakusa is a lively, tourist-filled area where every scene looks like a postcard.

Of course, there’s the lively atmosphere around Senso-ji Temple—but take a turn down a side street, and you’re bound to stumble upon unexpected delights. We took one of REN’s popular mesh bags and set out to explore the streets of Asakusa. With their breathability, light weight, and durability, these bags make the perfect companion for a day of wandering.

#Goat Mesh Series

This leather mesh is crafted using vegetable-tanned goat leather, finished with a distinctive cobblestone weave. The more you use it, the softer it becomes—developing a rich sheen and deepening in color over time.
Each piece is carefully handwoven using long strips made by joining cut leather together. As a result, it requires roughly five times more leather than a product of the same size made from a single sheet.
Meticulously woven in our Indian atelier, where skilled artisans gather, each piece is crafted with exceptional care and attention to detail. The result is a leather weave that is not only durable, but also features a breezy lightness and airy transparency—hallmarks of both craftsmanship and comfort.
To achieve the soft, supple texture of the weave, we intentionally use a flexible adhesive. Over time, the joints between leather strips may occasionally loosen as part of the material’s natural aging process.
