Yukiko Goto, the owner of hal, a beloved general store and the author of several lifestyle books, shares her experience with REN’s Sheep Mesh series. In this interview, she talks about why she was drawn to the collection—from its simple, body-conforming design to its practical functionality, such as staying securely on the shoulder even for those with narrow or sloping shoulders. #about Sheep Mesh
Soft and supple from the start, this leather develops a refined sheen as you use it over time.
This leather mesh is woven from sheepskin originally tanned for gloves, using a traditional ajiro-ami (basket weave) technique to create a single sheet of material. Similar to the way knitwear is constructed in fashion, the pre-woven sheet is cut and sewn to form the final bag shape. To preserve the natural suppleness of the hide, the leather is infused with a higher amount of oil than usual.
To achieve a refined depth of color, pigment infused with oil is lightly sprayed onto the surface, enhancing the leather’s signature smooth, almost adhesive touch. This material was brought to life through close collaboration with a workshop in India, home to skilled artisans specializing in leather mesh craftsmanship.
