Large but Lightweight — Why the Wide Tote Feels So Light
The appeal of the Wide Tote in pigskin HALLIE lies in its size-to-weight balance: large yet remarkably light. Despite its appearance, it is very lightweight—the bag itself weighs about 480g, roughly the same as two small apples.
Compared to a typical cowhide tote bag, there is a difference of about 1,000g. The reason for its lightness lies in the pigskin material itself, which is exceptionally light, as well as in the simple construction that preserves this lightness.
The flesh side of pigskin (the back side of the leather) sheds very little nap, so the bag is made without a lining. By making the most of the material’s strengths and keeping the number of parts to a minimum, the design remains simple yet full of intention—reflecting a dedication to lightness and to the material itself.

In addition to being lightweight, its soft texture is part of the appeal. The leather is supple enough to fold, with a plump, pleasant feel to the touch. The Wide Tote was designed with this perspective in mind, from the length of the handles to the overall proportions. Whether worn over the shoulder or carried by hand, it maintains a balanced look—and blends naturally with anyone.
The handles are long enough to be worn comfortably over the shoulder, regardless of gender. To prevent slipping and reduce the strain on the shoulder, the handles are crafted with a folded four-layer construction that gives them both width and thickness.

This is REN's original pigskin. Pig skin is a material that is relatively prone to scratches and uneven coloring, and was commonly used as a backing material. However, we saw its potential in its light weight, high density, durability despite its thinness, breathability, and fabric-like suppleness. By studying the differences in density and texture of different parts of the hides, as well as the dyes used, and by developing a method that wastes as little raw hides as possible, the appeal of this material is now reaching many people.
［ Notes on Product Purchases ］
Because it is natural leather, REN makes bags without discarding the scratches, grains, and uneven coloring that are part of the leather's character. Scratches do not disappear, but the more you use the leather, the more the surface of the leather becomes shiny and the more the scratches and color irregularities become familiar.
［ About color migration and color fading]
If worn with denim, indigo-dyed or cotton clothing, the color of the clothing may transfer to the leather due to friction. Also, if the bag gets wet due to rain, sweat, or friction, the color of the leather may transfer to your clothing. Please be careful when matching the bag with bright clothing.
［ Storage Method ]
If not used for a long period of time, store in a well-ventilated place. Avoid storing in a humid place as it may cause mold and leather deterioration.

Is it handmade?
All REN products are handcrafted by artisans.
Are your products made in Japan?
The country of manufacture varies depending on the material. Rather than limiting production to one place, we choose locations that best suit each material and technique, working with skilled partners in each region. This approach allows us to bring out the natural qualities of the materials. Currently, our products are made in Japan, Bali, and India.
Do I need to care for the leather?
As part of our approach, we believe leather can be used more freely in everyday life without excessive care.
Simple maintenance, such as wiping the surface, is usually sufficient.
If you choose to use leather care products such as creams or waterproof sprays, we recommend testing them on a less visible area first.
Are there any products without flaws or wrinkles?
At REN, we do not hide scratches and uneven coloring, which are the hallmarks of natural materials, with coatings, but rather respect the texture and individuality of the leather as it is. For this reason, there is almost no product without flaws and wrinkles. For details, please refer to the concept page. Please note that we do not accept exchanges of products due to scratches or wrinkles.
Will the leather fade?
Most of the leather used by REN is natural leather with no surface coating. When wet with rain or sweat, or when subjected to friction, the color will fade more easily than usual. In particular, when rain or other water permeates the bag, there is a greater chance of the dye transferring to items in the bag. Please be careful when matching the bag with white, beige, or other light-colored clothing.
Does it stain or dirty easily?
Natural leather tends to absorb moisture and oil. Colorless stains such as rain or water may become less noticeable after drying, but dark-colored or oily stains such as coffee or sauce will stain. In addition, many products do not have a topcoat or other stain-resistant finish, so some stains will become more noticeable with use.
Can it be repaired?
We do offer repair services. However, please note that customers are responsible for both round-trip shipping costs, which may result in higher overall expenses.
For this reason, we recommend consulting a local leather repair specialist near you.
